Most Zimbabwean Journalists Have "Resisted", "Rebelled"
Zimbabwean news media are increasingly becoming an antidemocratic force owing to the political, economic and professional problems that are continuously bedeviling the profession of journalism in the country. Public and private media owners have created "regimes" that undermine professional and ethical roles of journalists. What is even more troubling is that the country's journalists have resigned themselves to these developments, seeing them as "normal", and finding it natural that they have to adjust their professional roles to suit the new environment.

CIME Board Member Advocates for Cosmopolitanism
CIME was invited to speak at the Center for Freedom of the Media (CFOM) conference on media coverage of genocide and mass violence, held June 8-9 2009 at the University of Sheffield (UK). Speakers included Kevin Marsh of the BBC and CIME advisory board member Dr. Stephen J. Ward from the Center for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Adding a truly international dimension, Dr. Miladi Nourredine discussed his experience researching Al-Jazeera, and Dr. Winston Mano spoke about the media in his native Zimbabwe.

CIME chairs Oxford Univ. panel at Deutsche Welle
CIME Director Melisande Middleton chaired the Oxford University panel at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum on "Conflict Prevention in the Multimedia Age", which took place June 3-5 2009 in Bonn, Germany. The panel discussed the ethics and challenges of post-conflict elections reporting.

The Ethics of Information Sharing: A Growing Dialogue
Recently, I heard in the news that a reporter was jailed in a country for "revealing critical details" on the health of the country's president. It reminded me of my childhood, when my mother would call me into her room and tell me "your dad is sick but don't tell anyone." Little did I know at that time that I would grow up and make the ethics of information sharing a mission of my professional life.
