Happy 1st Anniversary to CIME

The CIME project is at the exciting start of a long journey. There is much to accomplish worldwide in the field of media ethics, and our mission is constantly fueled by enthusiasm on the part of media professionals who are eager to improve ethical standards and practices in their field.
One example is a recent email exchange I had with Hashhuu Naranjargal, the president of Globe International based in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. Ms. Naranjargal noted that the Mongolian media have adopted ethical codes of conduct, but also highlighted the need for actual enforcement of the codes. Ms. Naranjargal and her journalist staff are aware of the many obstacles they face, and with this in mind asked for CIME's "support, expertise and help." This voice is just one of many that inspire CIME to carry on.
The CIME message is already spanning journalist communities far and wide. Of course, challenges to press freedom and ethical media are present everywhere, and need to be acknowledged. But CIME's task is entirely feasible, and neither theoretical nor policy-oriented. We simply zero in on the micro level, focusing on what individual journalists can do to enforce a tacit code of ethics in their country's media, through weighing each decision they make in the newsroom or in the field, step by step, day by day. Building awareness, setting an example for your colleagues, seizing the courage to bring up an ethical dilemma in the newsroom – these are a few things you can do as a journalist to live up to whatever you believe is your responsibility in informing your audiences. And last but not least: you can and should always practice ethics within the limits of respect for your own personal safety and wellbeing.
The Center for International Media Ethics CIME began with a very small core: a group of journalists who'd attended a seminar hosted by The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) in Prague. Now, as we celebrate the first anniversary of the organization's incorporation in Chicago, we are amazed by the expansion of the international network of media professionals that has resulted from our initiative in so little time.
We invite you to check our website regularly for updates on our upcoming CIME Forum, online ethics training sessions, publications and other tools to help journalists build ethical practices. We encourage you to join our efforts, and spread the CIME word to your friends and colleagues who might be interested. Just drop an email to info@cimethics.org or call our office in Chicago at +1 773 598 5252, and we'll look forward to being in touch!
